The big news coming out of WWE SummerSlam Saturday night revolved around the main event and a double title switch involving the World Heavyweight Championship.

CM Punk toppled Gunther in an excellent 30-minute classic to capture his first WWE World Title in more than 12 years. Mere minutes later, Seth Rollins appeared at the top of the ramp, shed his crutches and knee brace to reveal that the injury he sustained a month ago was a ruse, and cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase to defeat Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Rollins' "injury" has been the subject of conversation since it occurred at Saturday Night's Main Event last month, when Seth's match against LA Knight was brought to a sudden halt when Rollins landed awkwardly on his feet on a moonsault attempt. After medical personnel examined Rollins, the match continued and Knight immediately finished him with a BFT for the abrupt win.

Fightful Select reports that "everyone in the know backstage were told that Rollins was slated to win" that match, and everyone, including medics and producers, was treating the injury as real at the time. Fightful indicated that details were kept so close to the vest that some people close to Rollins were concerned when they didn't hear back from him immediately.

Reports in the aftermath of SNME and Evolution - where Rollins was seen on crutches - revealed that there was a planned injury angle for that television special, but sources told Fightful that they weren't sure whether that was a rumor or a cover for a minor injury.

In the days that followed, very few details about Rollins' injury emerged, and that lack of specifics led many in the company to believe it was a work. However, Fightful reported that "producers, backstage personnel and talent ... stressed that they were not told specifically of such, but they just assumed it was a possibility."

Fightful also reported that the plan for Rollins to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase has been a tentative idea since before Saturday Night's Main Event three weeks ago, but the cash-in was not on any internal rundowns for Saturday's show. Staff backstage wasn't expecting a cash-in throughout the day, though once Rollins emerged onstage following the Gunther/Punk match, it became pretty obvious what was about to happen.

For his part, Rollins kept the work alive, hobbling around on crutches with his daughter on camera. Fightful also said "they even worked trainees at Black and Brave, Rollins' wrestling school."
