In late 1998, The Undertaker was working as a heel for only the second run in his WWE career and was feuding with Steve Austin. Their rivalry came to a head at the Rock Bottom Pay-Per-View in December, where Austin beat Undertaker in a Buried Alive match. After that, "The Phenom" took a few weeks off to recuperate from some minor injuries.

In the weeks he was absent, though, a sinister presence began to make itself known in WWE. Faarooq and Bradshaw formed a tag team that was serving a higher power, and wrestlers were being kidnapped by the duo. Finally, on the second Raw of 1999, the culprit was revealed as a reborn Undertaker - a more satanic "Phenom" than had ever been seen before, one promising to lead a new Ministry of Darkness.

Undertaker proceeded to cut a chilling promo, perform a human sacrifice, and close with an impossible-to-forget line: "Now you will know why you're afraid of the dark."
