The build to Undertaker's match at WrestleMania 32 was an absolute mess. 'Taker was forced to play the role of Vince McMahon's pawn in his war with his son, Shane, and the elder McMahon's repeated insults to Undertaker went unavenged. When "The Phenom" and Shane did collide in a lackluster match, Undertaker was victorious.

As a result of a pre-match stipulation, Undertaker's win meant that he would be allowed to continue competing at WrestleMania. Nevertheless, "The Phenom" took his gloves off in the ring and proceeded to tell friends and family that he was hanging up his boots. Most assumed that he'd reconsider in time for WrestleMania 33, but nothing was definite.

In October, WWE announced that Undertaker would be appearing at the 900th episode of Smackdown on November 15, pleasing many fans who expected the show to mark the beginning of a Wrestlemania build for "The Phenom." When 'Taker did show up, though, he outright stated that he was going to do a lot more than just WrestleMania, and proceeded to threaten the blue brand's top stars, telling them he was back to "digging holes and taking souls." Truly, Undertaker was just as intimidating as ever.
