THIS Is Really The Best Wrestling Storyline Happening Right Now

Don Callis Kenny Omega
AEW

All the while, of course, Omega was honing his abilities in this new arena as a subtly brilliant episodic TV storyteller. He nonetheless listened to those criticisms and applied them to his character. His dreams of changing the world with his friends were unsuccessful follies.

Omega, after spending weeks at the commentary booth burrowing into the shattered psyche of "tag team wrestler" Hangman Page, revealed his new, or rather old, persona and defeated Page at Full Gear 2020 under it - but only after ducking the Buckshot lariat at the very last second.

Omega was burrowing into his own psyche, his sense of ambition tortured by the idea that he wasn't 'the old Kenny Omega', 'the New Japan Kenny Omega', and so he regressed back to the idea of that character tweaked with the elusive idea of being a "TV star" gnawing at him. In October 2020, he debuted a preposterously overblown entrance with three separate phases of music, hot dancing chicks, the whole bit. He wore suits and sunglasses where previously - and how little he must have thought of Page in retrospect - he just wore t-shirts and shorts on TNT. He visited kids in school in a comedy segment all the funnier for how absurd it was - he went purely to tell them that he moved the needle in New Japan - that also spoke of a fear of not hitting key demos.

He later deflected criticisms of his rep onto Orange Cassidy, whom he deemed nothing but a comedy guy. He threatened Eddie Kingston with an impromptu match - a Dynamite no-no that Kingston rightfully said was "sports entertainment crap". He mocked the Michael Cole trope a few weeks back, before the Dark Order accused him of ducking Page, by claiming that he and Tony Schiavone had conversed "earlier in the day" when no such conversation had happened. Omega is playing what he believes a pro wrestling TV star should be because he is as much afraid of failure as his nemesis. He has given his soul over to Don Callis, a symbol of the old carny world Omega wished to change once upon a time.
