Is Mariah May set to trade AEW for WWE?

Following reports yesterday that AEW's Mariah May is expected to sign with WWE when her existing deal is up later this year, there's now a smidge of an update on this situation.

Yesterday's Wrestling Observer Radio saw Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez both note how those they'd spoken to in WWE were aware that May was keen to sign with the market leader, while those they'd spoken to in AEW were under the impression that, yes, the Glamour was set to jump to WWE. It should go without saying, WWE has strong interest in signing Mariah May, and AEW is extremely keen to keep the hugely talented 26-year-old.

On this topic, Fightful Select adds how, despite those rumblings, sources they've reached out to seem to suggest that things are quite as cut-and-dried as some believe. Instead, Mariah is simply being smart and making the most of her leverage and negotiating power right now. Fightful also notes how, even though she didn't make her AEW debut until late 2023, she was actually signed by Tony Khan's promotion in August of that year. That contract was a two-year deal, meaning Mariah could be a free agent in less than four months unless a new agreement can be agreed on or if AEW has an extension option they can trigger.

From those Fightful spoke to, the biggest surprise about this wider situation is the length of Mariah May's AEW contract. Historically, the company has signed talents to three-year - sometimes five-year - deals, but it was a two-year contract that came together for Mariah.

Having lost the AEW Women's Championship back to Toni Storm at Grand Slam Australia in February, May has not been seen on AEW programming since Revolution last month, where she came up short in her quest to regain that title from Timeless Toni. Fightful also notes that they've not heard of the English star being in attendance for any AEW shows since that Revolution PPV.

All in all, these next few months could be huge in the career of Mariah May. Does she opt to make the move to WWE, or will she instead decide to stay with AEW? Regardless, Mariah's certainly holding all of the cards here.
