WWE: 10 Most Excruciatingly Awkward Promos Ever Cut

6. Ted Dibiase's Treatment Of Virgil - 1987

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiIxBEVgWmY The Million Dollar Man is considered one of the greatest gimmicks in WWF history, played brilliantly by Ted Dibiase. The entire package was perfect. The music, the flashy suits, the laugh, and the money-stuffing down the beaten opponents' throats. But nothing screamed rich jerk like having your butler accompany you to the ring and do your dirty work. But what type of reaction are you trying to get when there's an underlying racist tone to everything? When Ted Dibiase debuted in 1987, he had his man-servant Virgil who he gave orders to. He paid him, so it wasn't complete slavery, but the way he treated Virgil was just wrong. As Virgil shined Dibiase's shoes, Ted remarked coldly how he didn't do it right, and made Virgil do it again. Okay, Dibiase is a heel, and abusing those lesser than you is enough to make you hated. But with the fact that Dibiase was white and Virgil was black, there was always a thin veil of racism to the vignettes. Even though Dibiase was paying Virgil, he was treating him like a slave. The disgusted look on Virgil's face told a thousand stories that he was doing degrading things that he would never do under any other circumstance. At least the story had a happy ending when Virgil finally rebelled against The Million Dollar Man at the Royal Rumble 1991, and then took the Million Dollar Belt from Ted at Summerslam that year.
