In 2007 Calaway split with his then-wife. It is unknown when Taker started dating his WWE coworker Michelle McCool, but it was reportedly at some point in 2007. The pair started to be increasingly photographed together, but for whatever reasons, wrestling news sites never reported it for a long time. This perhaps is down to the huge respect for Taker, or maybe there were some legal implications. Whatever the reason, the whole world knew McCool and Calaway were an item, with the story eventually being confirmed. It stirred some raised eyebrows backstage, no doubt about it. The young diva was dating a veteran wrestler who wielded more power than anyone not named Triple H, and all of a sudden, McCool became one of the most pushed divas on the roster.
