Despite taking Bruno Sammartino and Bob Backlund to time limit draws in many a main event and a lengthy run as the second Intercontinental champion he was always left off the Wrestlemania card. Patera perhaps hurt his best chance of getting onto 'Mania when in 1984 he decided it would be a good idea to smash the windows of a McDonald's that denied him service (they were closed) after an event he was working with the AWA. Despite claiming the employee smashed the windows Patera then took it upon himself to assault the cops who were their to arrest him. With a possible sentence hanging over his head the WWF/E refused to push him and in 1986 he was sentenced to 2 years in prison. When he returned he was a mid card talent at best and left shortly after an abysmal run.
