1. Stone Cold Steve Austin
http://youtu.be/ObbB7L5RCH8 If there is an incident which for many defined the start of the most successful period in WWE's history, this would be arguably that moment. The venue was the Rosemont Horizon, and on the grandest stage of them all, one match would steal the show, and would instantly become one of the greatest and most important matches in the history of professional wrestling. The popular technical wizard Bret "Hitman" Hart, would go into battle with the hard-hitting, hard-talking Stone Cold Steve Austin in a submission match. The result of the match would go on to live in WWE folklore forever, as these two world class athletes put on a brilliant show for the crowd in attendance and millions watching at home. The submission match was brutal, leaving Austin a bloodied mess and both men's extremities beaten down. And as the match wore on, the actions of both competitors began to spark a reaction in the crowd, as Hart's evident frustration and Austin's unwillingness to submit would lead to a rare occurrence in professional wrestling. The crowd had gone into the event Bret Hart fans, but as the match wore on the crowd began to turn of the Canadian in favour of the Rattlesnake. Austin's grit and determination had struck a chord with the WWE fans, but the moment that secured him a place in the hearts of the crowd would not take place until the climax of the match. At this point, Bret Hart placed Austin in his devastating sharpshooter, and despite being wracked with pain and the iconic image of blood running down his face, Austin didn't quit. Minute upon minute passed with Austin desperately trying to break Hart's hold and reach the ropes, until eventually he couldn't sustain anymore, and lay unconscious, and lost the match. Nevertheless, what Austin won was the respect and admiration of all who watched their roller-coaster of a contest. Austin's rapport with the audience was the catalyst for him to lead the WWE against WCW in the Monday Night Wars, as his turn into a beloved face made him the eternal poster-boy of the Attitude Era. The face turn of Austin is undoubtedly the most important in the history of the WWE, and very likely it was the most well-executed moment also.
