8. He Is Actually Rubbing Off On JBL
When John Bradshaw Layfield decided to hang up his wrestling boots and join the commentary team, it was like a breath of fresh air. He immediately instilled a new attitude not seen since Jerry Lawler decided to be a little more generic with his style, kept Michael Cole in check with his embarrassing dialogue by viciously ripping apart everything he said and knew how to really put over any talent that was in the ring. His impact was immediately felt and he gained a whole new following based purely on his commentary observations alone. After a hiatus from the WWE (which only enforced how inadequate Cole really is), he returned and it seemed that all may be right with the world, cause if I can't scream at Michael Cole explaining how he screws it up every time, then surely JBL will do it on behalf of the voiceless. But then after the initial return, something began to happen. JBL started to make totally unfunny jokes. He started complementing Cole's observations. He started repeating everything he had previously said in another match. And he started that god awful internet show. Then it dawned on me, Michael Cole is rubbing off on JBL. This once promising commentator who could've easily been the next Jesse Ventura or Jerry Lawler (of old), has decided to disregard all the knowledge that he has attained in his illustrious career and take on the Michael Cole school of colour commentary. Now every week on Smackdown after he says "we fight on Friday nights" for the 10th time I just cringe and shake my head. How can such a great talent be making such inane and obvious mistakes in his commentary? Oh yeah, that's right, he is sitting next to the black hole of Cole that has literally sucked the life and light out of this once great observer of all things in the ring. And this in turn has made everything even worse when it comes to commentary. Now every week we are subjected to the exact same banter and rhetoric between JBL and Cole they had the previous week. And if that does not affect your ratings, even in a tiny way, than I am a drunk Dutchman. I know it makes me want to turn off. And I don't take the decision of turning off a wrestling show lightly, they have to really stuff up for me to stop watching. Like allowing a famous wrestlers daughter take over a wrestling division without a single match or any experience just because of her last name (which is fake), but that's a completely different story.
