WWE: 10 Superstars You Won't Believe Vince McMahon Gave Contracts To

1. Buff Bagwell

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=km9PPOs2_I8 Despite having one of the worst reputations in all of wrestling, Buff Bagwell was signed to a WWF contract for the WCW Invasion angle in 2001. Perhaps it was his pay-per-view matches with Disco Inferno and David Flair that caught Vince McMahon's eye. We may never know. But as WCW was bought out by McMahon, he desperately needed to stock up on talent to give the angle any chance of success. On the night of the final episode of Nitro, he decided to poll the audience and brought up a variety of WCW wrestlers to gauge the crowd's reaction to them. Bagwell's name was mentioned, and he surprisingly received a pretty big pop. It was good enough to get him a contract. Sure, guys like Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall, Goldberg and Ric Flair would not make the Invasion due to their enormous contracts with Time Warner, but Bagwell could be had for a reasonable price. As far as the original WCW talent that signed with the WWF, Bagwell was one of the more well-known names. And from a purely visual standpoint, you can see why Vince thought he had something. Bagwell looks like everything you'd want in a wrestler. He's good lookin, and incredibly muscular, but he quickly proved that he was most definitely "not the stuff." He lasted one week on WWE TV before being released from his contract. This is probably longer than most people would have guessed. Apparently Bagwell got into a fight backstage with Shane Helms, and later faked an injury after a SmackDown taping. It was not a good. His match with Booker T, which was the first WCW match aired on WWF television, remains a colossal disaster and greatly damaged the Invasion angle before it could ever get off the ground. To top if off, and to add the ultimate embarrassment, Bagwell's mom called the WWE to complain about his travel arrangements during his short time in the company. Ouch.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
