WWE: 10 Superstars Who Wrestled As Jobbers Before Later Fame

6. AJ Styles

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtEKe2YWOKg For lack of a better term, AJ Styles would probably be considered the hottest free agent in wrestling if this was 1999 but, with WWE being the only game in town and not considering TNA anything worthwhile, Styles might never get his shot in the big time. However, it's impossible to ignore that Styles won every title in Total Nonstop Action wrestling and is their biggest homegrown star. Trained by Rick Martel, Styles kicked around the indies as usual until ending up in WCW and participating in their tournament for the newly created Cruiserweight tag titles. The titles weren't exactly prestigious as there were only two teams to hold the belts before WCW was sold to Vince McMahon in 2001. Still, Styles and his partner were eliminated in the first round by Kid Romeo and Elix Skipper, the eventual winners. His contract was not picked up when McMahon bought WCW but they did bring him in for a number of dark matches against workers like Hurricane Helms and Rico Constantino. Styles counted the lights every time but was actually offered a WWF developmental deal. However, this deal would require him to relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio and he had to decline due to his wife's college education. Who knows what would have happened if Styles had accepted the WWF's offer. He could have had a successful run with the company and maybe won the Intercontinental title a few times or he could have been like other WCW washouts and been released after being saddled with a failed gimmick. Still, Styles may still get his shot and, if not, it's only a matter of time before he returns to TNA.
