WWE: 10 Wrestler Insider Terms Explained

9. Mark

You know those little kids who go to the shows and wear the wrestling merchandise and cheer for the good guys while booing the bad guys? Those are marks. Every wrestling fan starts out as a mark, and over time the fan will grow out of becoming a mark and will be "smart" about the wrestling business. It's like when a child learns the truth about Santa Claus, only in this case Santa is a giant man who grapples in tights for a living. A mark is simply anyone who thinks that professional wrestling is real. They think that everything that happens in the ring is legitimate, and when storylines take place, they are genuinely affected by whatever the outcome might be. Most fans tend to use mark as a derogatory terms to poke fun of people who take what's happening in the ring too seriously, or are infatuated with a particular wrestler. However, being a mark isn't always a bad thing. There are some moments in wrestling that, whether it's real or not, tend to be really awesome; even the biggest cynics in wrestling take notice. In these moments, it's considered okay to "mark out" for the moment and applaud or cheer as loud as possible. So if you know someone who thinks professional wrestling is real, don't go and ruin the magic just yet. Play along and mark out along with them. You'll have a much better time with the show.
