WWE: 10 Wrestler Insider Terms Explained

8. Pop

If you have ever watched a professional wrestling show, then you have heard a pop. A pop is the reaction that a crowd gives during a show. Whether it's towards a wrestling, a storyline, a promo, or anything having to do with professional wrestling in general, an arena packed with fans will react to it with a pop. Sometimes the pop is huge and other times it's so mild you could hear a pin drop. Management will judge whether or not a professional wrestler is worth pushing (another term that will be covered later) by listening to the crowd and judging how loud the pop is. For example, Daniel Bryan has one of the loudest pops in professional wrestling right now. His yes chants are yelled by everyone in the arena, and management knows that now is a great time for Bryan to be one of the top faces of the company. If Bryan did not get these pops from the fans, he wouldn't be considered a main event caliber wrestler no matter how skilled he is in the ring. There are also different types of pops. There's the name pop where simply uttering a wrestler's name gets a big reaction from the crowd, the hometown pop where a wrestler gets a loud reaction for competing in his or her hometown venue, and the cheap pop where simply mentioning the hometown in a promo ("Finally, The Rock has come back to ") or promoting the city's local sports team gets the fans ignited. The pop is very important for a televised wrestling show. It lets the viewers know when something big is happening, and it can make a good match sound like a great match. At the same time, the lack of a pop can also make a good match sound like a sub-par one if the audience isn't feeling it.
