WWE: 11 Top Stars Who Quit Over Creative Decisions
8. Ric Flair Quits WCW Over Spartacus Gimmick
Jim Herd as World Championship Wrestling Executive Vice President was an important man in the formative years of WCW, unfortunately he was also completely inept. The businessman had came into wrestling with experience as a station manager and later as a regional head of a Pizza chain. Needless to say, he didn't really understand wrestling history or the way the industry works. Herd suffered widespread criticism, but his most notable error of judgement was in relation to Ric Flair. In 1991 the executive went to Ric and told him he needed to change. In all seriousness, Herd proposed a gimmick repackaging, Flair should change his name to Spartacus and compete as a Roman Gladiator. Herd genuinely saw money in this. He went on to inform Flair that he should cut his hair and get his ear pierced. That's right, the guy at the top of WCW wanted his most famous star to change his name and shave off his distinctive blonde locks. Flair instead started the reaching out process to Vince McMahon's WWF, and was gone a short while later with Herd's insistence on a pay cut also convincing the Nature Boy his time down south was over.
