WWE: 12 Matches That Were Booked All Wrong

2. Triple H Vs Randy Orton, Wrestlemania 25

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qpf03gMqbc0 Ever since picking Randy Orton as his personal pet project in 2003, Triple H has had an obsession with working a major main event with his protege. The WWE first tried to do this in 2004, but the program was ruined when fans got behind Batista instead. On that occasion, the WWE had pulled the trigger too soon, Orton had been meant to face Hunter at Wrestlemania 21 but the match the pair contested at Unforgiven 2004 had killed any interest rather than stoked interest. Fast forward to Wrestlemania 25 and the company tried again. This time we had Hunter as the good guy and Orton as the twisted heel. This was poor booking in itself because Hunter was the champion, which goes against the tried and tested formula of a hero chasing the villain in possession of the treasure. Still, the match was kind of getting over due to some very intense segments. The buildup included Orton physically assaulting Hunter's wife Stephanie and The Game retaliating by smashing up Orton's house when Mrs. Orton was home. It was deeply personal and the level of hatred was intense €” after weeks of abuse everyone was ready for a war. However, rather then allowing the two men settle their differences in say a Hell In A Cell or No DQ Match ... the WWE instead made the stipulation that "HHH would lose the title to Orton if he got disqualified or counted out". So essentially WWE had built it up as a personal feud, only to kill the match with a stipulation that didn't allow for any violent retribution. Instead we got a technical wrestling match. A classic case of promising the world and delivering a disappointment. It also didn't help that Undertaker and Shawn Michaels had the best WWE match ever on the undercard. Just like Mania X8, Hunter's big win had been ruined by the placing of his match on the card.
