WWE: 5 Old School Concepts That Should Be Ready To Dust Off

2. The Spirit Of The Sport

Daniel Bryan Ring Of Honor, when it began, was conceived around recreating the basics of wrestling. The rules matter, and everyone follows the rules, and when you don't you are ostracized and hated for it. The WWE needs to explain the rules of the contest at least once during the show. Just the preamble to the match's commentary. This match is scheduled for one fall with an x time limit -- and explain the rules to the people tuning in. Wrestling is unique, it is not the NFL -- because there aren't HEELS in the traditional sense of the NFL. When two teams face each other, you're not looking at good guys and bad guys out there. But when a team is caught doing something less than fair, like Belichek's taping of the opposing squads, you have a heel. They need to catch people up that a closed fist is against the rules, that you get warned for punching. Kicks are allowed, a la MMA, but you've got to explain why the ref counts in the corner -- why being in the ropes breaks a count. Why there's a count at all, and why the ref counts when a guy goes to the post. It's become commonplace for the GOOD GUYS to hold a four count in the ropes, and not adhere to the spirit of the sport. Competition is supposed to be fair, and good guys follow the rules.
