WWE: 5 Reasons AJ Styles Won't Be Signed (And 5 Reasons Why They Should)

1. P1 Is In His Prime - He's Ready For A Run At The Very Top

Now, don't get me wrong, I love TNA. Even with the dodgy booking, bizarre finishes and endless, endless promos, TNA is still a damn good wrestling show (largely because the roster is, as I have said elsewhere in this article, AMAZING). Having said that, TNA is tiny compared to the size and drawing power of the mighty WWE. The company itself is over more so than any single performer within its ranks could ever hope to be. Whatever you may think of Vince, HHH, Stephanie and their guy Super Cena, the fact remains that the WWE is the only truly major league product around. Dragon's Gate is inexplicably awesome. Ring of Honour is another hot bed of unbelievable talent. The Indies will always make for a great night out, but man, WWE is where it's at. WWE is where legends are born and stars are buried, it is where champions are forged and then internationally recognized. You might resent that fact, but you cannot argue with it. In times gone by, the NWA Champion could make a genuine claim to being the Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion of wrestling, in much the same way that boxing champions do today. When Lou Thesz was on top, he was easily the most recognized wrestler in the world. Ditto with early NWA legends like 'Whipper' Billy Watson, Edouard Carpentier, Pat O'Connor and 'Nature Boy' Buddy Rogers. Each can lay a claim to have been widely recognized as world champions. Today, by that yardstick, the only wrestling World Champion is the WWE Champion. My fellow Brit Magnus (reigning TNA World Champion €“ and good luck to ya, mate) is NOT the champion of the world. (ROH Champ) Adam Cole is NOT the champion of the world. (NWA Champ) Satoshi Kojima is NOT the champion of the world. Like it or not, Randy Orton is the champion of the world. Why? Because people who aren't wrestling fans know who he is and know that he is WWE champ, that's why. It's all about visibility. Its also about how many people will pay to see you wrestle, how many people will tune in to watch you wrestle and how many people will instantly recognize you as the champion. The truth is that WWE's global exposure is so great that even WWE curtain jerkers are better known than other promotions' mightiest main event stars. So, by booking A.J Styles in the WWE, he would finally have made it to the big time. 'The Phenomenal One' would have a chance to be a part of the biggest pro wrestling (sorry, 'sports entertainment') company in the world. Here's the hottest free agent in professional wrestling, in his prime and (amazingly) injury free, with a readymade and rabid fanbase tripping over themselves to buy his T-shirts, action figures and replica gloves (the only purpose of which appears to be that you can make his 'P1' logo by sticking your hands together €“ I'll bet DDP is kicking himself for not thinking of that one!). Basically, they want to cheer on their hero, all the way to the top of the card, all the way to the top of the biggest wrestling bonanza on the planet. No, WWE won't be signing A.J Styles anytime soon, but as I hope you'll agree, that is a big mistake on their part.

I am a professional author and lifelong comic books/pro wrestling fan. I also work as a journalist as well as writing comic books (I also draw), screenplays, stage plays, songs and prose fiction. I don't generally read or reply to comments here on What Culture (too many trolls!), but if you follow my Twitter (@heyquicksilver), I'll talk to you all day long! If you are interested in reading more of my stuff, you can find it on http://quicksilverstories.weebly.com/ (my personal site, which has other wrestling/comics/pop culture stuff on it). I also write for FLiCK http://www.flickonline.co.uk/flicktion, which is the best place to read my fiction work. Oh yeah - I'm about to become a Dad for the first time, so if my stuff seems more sentimental than usual - blame it on that! Finally, I sincerely appreciate every single read I get. So if you're reading this, thank you, you've made me feel like Shakespeare for a day! (see what I mean?) Latcho Drom, - CQ
