WWE: 6 Most Controversial Old School Gimmicks That Are Unacceptable In 2014

Some of the most controversial gimmicks that would be unacceptable in 2014 are past characters that don’t fit into today’s PG standards, those that are flat-out racist or simply terrible.

Controversy creates interest. Which is true to some extent, however controversy doesn€™t always equal acceptable or good in time. In wrestling, performers are given gimmicks in order to find a connection with the audience. Those gimmicks create common ground between the performer and spectator, bizarre interest, or strong detest. What I will examine, are some of the most controversial gimmicks that would be unacceptable in 2014. I€™ll look at the past characters that don€™t fit into today€™s PG standards, those that are flat-out racist or simply terrible. Wrestling at times is a microcosm of society. One would have to look no further than The Wyatt Family, who could be confused for Duck Dynasty off looks alone. Most people hate their bosses, and to focus on that, WWE created the controversial Mr. McMahon character. Conversely, this can go terribly wrong as creative ideas delve deeper into everyday life's reflections. It perhaps isn€™t good taste for African-Americans to be portrayed as criminals or thieves, but this did not stop WWE with CrymeTime. Playing into nationalities and racial stereotypes has gone on since the days of Frank Gotch taking on €œThe Russian Lion€ George Hackenschmidt in 1908. CrymeTime is one example, and this happened less than 10 years ago! Going further back in time pushes the line of unacceptability back even further. As always, comments are welcome below and debate is encouraged.
