WWE Battleground 2016: 10 Things WWE Got Right
7. Not Outright Beating Darren Young
It must be tough to manage wins and losses in WWE. Even though there's a sense that they don't really matter in the grand scheme of things, fans do react to the peaks and troughs of momentum that victories and defeats drum up. Even with Darren Young's current underdog gimmick, it's important to keep him looking somewhat valuable.
Those on the creative team must be lauded for achieving that at Battleground. He faced The Miz for the WWE Intercontinental Title, but wasn't made to look like an afterthought who had merely been built up randomly for this one-off title shot. Emerging from the pay-per-view, he can continue to hone both his character and relationship with mentor Bob Backlund on Raw.
A double disqualification ended the Intercontinental fray, a finish that won't please everyone, but manages to keep the belt on Miz and refrain from squashing Young's resurgence.
This was the correct call, because it feeds the cowardly persona of Miz and enables Young to proceed without the knowledge that he was only there to make up the numbers.
