In the lead-up to Extreme Rules, WWE's scriptwriters successfully weaved the tale that AJ Styles wasn't exactly comfortable with the idea of beating down a helpless Roman Reigns with a steel chair. That's because Styles is a definite babyface, almost a classic throwback to a time when the good guys really were good.

Then, his mercy was rewarded by the contrasting visual, Reigns later hammered him viciously with the same weapon. This only made AJ's madcap chair rampage on the pay-per-view all the more entertaining, it felt like weeks in the making. AJ thumped everyone in sight with the chair during the closing moments of the main event, including both of The Usos who had entered the ring.

Seldom do chairshots pack that same dull thud as they once did when colliding with the skulls of wrestlers. Now, they are strictly landed on a performer's back, for obvious, concussion-related reasons.

Styles managed to make his shots look impactful, they didn't come across as wimpy or like he was waiting on his rivals to set themselves up in position before hitting them.
