7. Becky Lynch Vs. Lacey Evans - RAW Women’s Championship Match

About as good as could reasonably be expected, this was some commendation of Becky Lynch in her formal role as The Man. To pull even a TV quality affair from the green and skittish Lacey Evans underscored her ring generalship, in the wake of the Southern Belle’s Royal Rumble disaster—but this was no broomstick job.

Showing glimpses of what management is determined to see in her, Evans was expressive and instinctive in her interplay with the crowd, displaying an aptitude for the intangibles that cannot be taught. Her fundamentals remain inconsistent, and it’s perhaps an indictment that a mere nine minutes exposed her. This unspectacular but nonetheless engaging match almost fell apart by its conclusion, and if this all reads euphemistically, it is. The relief has driven the rating because, at the very least, Becky Lynch wasn’t brought down to the level of a performer who had no real business in such a high-profile programme.

And, if Becky spent too long underneath, the crowd at least rallied behind her. Becky threw real weight behind her body blows, and Lacey performed her directed character spots well, even if she was out of position for too many of the spots she couldn’t rely on anybody else for.

TL;DR: It wasn’t a disaster, and thank f*ck for that.

Star Rating: **3/4
