WWE has just announced the first Network/Peacock live special of the NXT 2.0 era.

As confirmed during last night's NXT Show, NXT WarGames will take place on Sunday 5 December. This continues the developmental brand's now-annual tradition of holding a special show around the dual-ring stipulation towards the end of the year, with the last supercard, TakeOver: WarGames 2020, going down on 6 December 2020.

It's notable that this show hasn't been handed the TakeOver brand. The broadcasters announced it only as "NXT WarGames", with no mention of "TakeOver" at all, perpetuating the speculation on that specific IP's future.

PWInsider's Mike Johnson reported in October that WWE had no future TakeOver events listed on its internal calendar for the remainder of 2021. Last week, Wrestlenomics' Brandon Thurston identified 5 December as the next date for a TakeOver-style show, but was unable to confirm if "TakeOver" branding would be used.

WWE's last NXT TakeOver event took place before a widescale revamp of its entire developmental system. Held on 22 August, TakeOver 36 saw Samoa Joe take the NXT Championship from Karrion Kross, though the veteran was quick to relinquish the strap due to an unspecified injury.
