WWE Payback 2016: 10 Things We Learned
1. Roman Reigns & AJ Styles Will Meet Again At Extreme Rules
Playing into the co-General Manager idea, both Shane and Stephanie McMahon had an impact on Payback's main event. Colliding for the WWE World Heavyweight Title, Roman Reigns and AJ Styles put on a really interesting mix of styles, no pun intended! The ending was formed through several false finishes.
Firstly, Reigns was counted out. Shane reversed this, restarting the match from scratch with no count outs. Then, Reigns was disqualified for an apparently accidental low blow to the challenger. Again, the match was restarted without disqualifications, this time it was Stephanie who came out to make the call.
Eventually, Roman managed to pin AJ following a sweet-looking Spear. Backstage, Vince, Shane and Stephanie had a little meeting to close out the show. They all agreed that Styles was worthy of a rematch, and the redo was booked as an 'Extreme Rules' Match at the forthcoming pay-per-view of the same name.
It's heartening that AJ's title shot wasn't just a one-off, but it'll be interesting to see if a second defeat has much impact on his career afterwards. He's talented enough to overcome that hurdle, that's for sure.
