8. Wrestlemania 21- Overall Score: 3.6/5
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSpz42vAhew OMQ: 4 CROWD: 3 STAR POWER: 3 HR: 4 FEUDS: 3 PROD. VALUE: 5 By this point, Wrestlemania had absolutely no business being an arena event, so it was somewhat surprising they decided to host two more arena shows following the return to Madison Square Garden for 'Mania XX. What it did allow for, however, was one of the best promotional strategies and themes in the history of Wrestlemania: "Wrestlemania goes Hollywood", complete with a series of parodies done from famous films, such as Pulp Fiction, Forest Gump, Basic Instinct (yes, Stacy) and Taxi Driver. I don't think I'll ever get the image of Kurt Angle and Christy Hemme, spoofing When Harry Met Sally out of my mind! The show itself, overall, a success too- let down somewhat by a comparatively tame pair of main events, in which John Cena and Batista both won their first World Championships. They'd win a few more in years to come. Also noteworthy from this event: the first Money in the Bank Ladder Match- we'd see a few more of those too- the most underrated Shawn Michaels Wrestlemania match ever, in my opinion, against Kurt Angle and the Big Show in a diaper. Alright, so perhaps that last one, not so much an attraction as a deterrent but hey, let's not discriminate, they're might be someone out there, reading this, who would like to see Big Show in a sumo diaper, stranger things right? Or is that about as strange as it gets? Wrestlemania 21 was a charismatic, unique, historic Wrestlemania that doesn't get the credit it deserves sometimes. It's also the last of, what I consider to be, the "Golden Age" of Wrestlemania. Speaking of that... 7. Wrestlemania XX- Overall Score: 3.6/5
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZ3Q2B6JRx8 OMQ: 4 CROWD: 3 STAR POWER: 4 HR: 4 FEUDS: 3 PROD. VALUE: 4 Only a '3' for Crowd Heat here, Liam? You mad? What about Brock 'n' Goldberg and all that jazz? 'Mania 20's crowd in NYC was good but not great. Had some high moments and some low, including being relatively quiet for a lot of the undercard. This event- at 4 ½ hours- being the longest in Wrestlemania history withstanding, such a state was understandable. What 'Mania XX did well was convey the sense of a milestone. "Where it all begins... again" the tag-line, we saw the likes of Undertaker's return to his classic, Deadman gimmick; we saw The Rock return to fight by the side of old ally Mick Foley in his last WWE match for almost 8 years; we saw the greatest triple-threat match in WWE history; the Wrestlemania debuts of Randy Orton, John Cena and Batista and yes, we saw Brock vs Goldberg- noteworthy for a whole different reason. The ending shot of Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit celebrating in the ring was a moving, rewarding experience at the time. It's such as shame that image has become part and parcel of so much grief, ever since. Not quite perfect, for this event to have made higher, I would've liked that extra half-hour cut and perhaps 2-3 matches, such as the random two 4-corners tag matches and that pointless Cruiserweight Open. We'll leave the Playboy Pillow Fight in, just... because. 6. Wrestlemania III- Overall Score: 3.6/5
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkmJxx1DsIg OMQ: 2 CROWD: 5 STAR POWER: 4 HR: 5 FEUDS: 3 PROD. VALUE: 4 It's a widely quoted comment, that there wouldn't be a WWE nowadays if not for Wrestlemania. Perhaps a more astute comment might be "there wouldn't be a WWE nowadays were it not for Wrestlemania III". This is where the dynasty of 'Mania truly began. The massive crowd, those little rings that carried the superstars to the big ring, the mat classic that was Savage vs Steamboat and Hogan's slam on Andre. You all know it, you've all seen it or you're not reading this list. Wrestlemania III is like a gemstone amidst the muck of the first 5 'Manias- the comparative slackness of those events only enhancing the prestige of #3. From the opening, quite wonderful performance of 'America The Beautiful', through the Hart Foundation's victory in a tag against the British Bulldogs- a match as good as it sounds- through Steamboat, "the slam" and the ending poses, 'Mania III felt like a spectacle you'd have been mad to miss. There's a little bit of magic in 'Mania III. It's where the showcase of the immortals became just that. 5. Wrestlemania X- Overall Score: 3.6/5
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1ftuTWRM_E OMQ: 4 CROWD: 3 STAR POWER: 2 HR: 4 FEUDS: 5 PROD. VALUE: 4 So, anyone remember anything significant happening at Wrestlemania X? I mean, besides that old Ladder Match and Bret vs Owen and the striking black and yellow ropes and the sliding 'X' doors facing the hard camera, as they often tend to do in MSG. Well, Randy Savage returned to the ring, defeating Crush in a fun, Falls Count Anywhere match and they settled the '94 Royal Rumble dispute by having Champion Yokozuna defend his strap twice- Bret Hart eventually avenging his defeat the year prior by winning the belt at the show's close. Wrestlemania X got it right. Whilst not as proficient, in terms of star power, as to previous Wrestlemanias- due primarily to it being the first ever without Hulk Hogan- it hit home where previous and subsequent 'Mania's didn't. If you comprise a list of the top ten matches in Wrestlemania history, not too many would bat and eyelid at the presence of the Ladder Match and Bret vs Owen being in that list. Wrestlemania X is a testament to the quality of good wrestling, I encourage anyone who hasn't seen it to do so. Now. Well, that is after you've finished my list, of course! 4. Wrestlemania XXVIII- Overall Score: 3.83/5
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IwpSFm3rGc OMQ: 3 CROWD: 4 STAR POWER: 4 HR: 3 FEUDS: 4 PROD. VALUE: 5 Hmmm, why do I sense one or two out there shaking their head at this being #4? Is it Daniel Bryan getting beat in 18 seconds by any chance? I mean, it's not as if it sent the YES! Movement into high gear, ultimately propelling his career to woozy heights. Oh, fine so he would've got their anyway! Is it the general bitterness that seems to surround the John Cena vs The Rock feud? Rock isn't here full time, he was winded, terrible sharpshooter, TWICE in a lifetime!... bah, be quiet. We're being objective here, remember? Here lies the most purchased WWE PPV of all time; only marginally beating out the tally set by 'Mania 23. Here lies an event set up by a solid calender year of promotion. Here lies an excellent Hell in a Cell match, so spit if they didn't use the cage that much. Here lies the event where CM Punk came, saw and bought the t-shirt as WWE Champion. YES, OK, Daniel Bryan lost in 18 seconds; you got to see AJ Lee in a sex-bomb emerald outfit. It wasn't all bad! On a serious note, Wrestlemania 28 seems to divide people somewhat but you can't argue with it's success. It looked great, it was built up tremendously, the matches were good overall. The Rock brought thousands of fresh eyeballs to the event. Tally it up, you get 3.83. This event is where it belongs: near the top.
