WWE WrestleMania 42: 20 Things That NEED To Happen
13. Rey Mysterio Comes Agonisingly Close
WWE's agents will need to be real careful with Rey on Sunday. Not so much from a physical standpoint, although that’s always a concern for older talents. Nah, more so from a fan reaction standpoint. They’ll want to book a nearly moment for Mysterio, but also won’t want to rain on Penta’s parade or coax booing from the audience when he hauls down the IC belt in the end.
Thus, assuming there is one, putting Rey’s almost-but-not-quite reach midway through against a heel like McDonagh or a bruiser like Rusev sounds fair enough. Then, WWE can clear the air before Penta’s win and Mysterio still gets some shine in a match he was touch and go on even being involved with.
Initially, it seemed for all the world like the masked legend would be tapping out and retiring to Gunther whilst the bright lights of 'Mania rained down, but someone changed their minds on that. It could've been Triple H, it could've been someone else on the creative team who stuck up a hand to suggest an alternative, or it could've been Rey saying he'd rather retire vs. Dominik than somebody else.
Take that mask off, Gunther Mysterio. You're not a real Mysterio.
Cherry picking his spots to showcase what he's capable of without stealing any thunder from other high-flyers involved in the 6-man seems like Rey Rey 101. He knows he isn't the priority on this occasion, so he won't go out of his way to act like it. Mysterio will, however, have his say.
