40. ‘Adorable’ Adrian Is Outta Here! (1987)

Look away now, Roddy Piper fans.

Yes, the 'Hot Scot' was great, but some of his higher-profile feuds with those not-named Hulk Hogan tanked hard in the 80s. For proof, just go back and revisit his 'Hair vs. Hair' clanger vs. Adrian Adonis from WrestleMania III. It was 6+ minutes of nothingness before Roddy took the win, 'Adorable' lost his locks, and then Adonis was sent packing from the federation.

Adrian had retooled his gimmick to become akin to an even more extreme version of Gorgeous George in 1985. Or, perhaps 'Exotic' Adrian Street was more accurate - Adonis practically borrowed Street's entire act, with the key differences being that he had Jimmy Hart as a manager and was in the dizzying world of the WWF during one of its biggest peaks.

However, going the effeminate route for cheap heat didn't do much for Adrian. Admittedly, he was pushing the envelope in a company that wasn't exactly known for it whilst trying to sell new-fangled things (for wrestling) like toys, video games and pay-per-views, but people couldn't wait to see the back of the 'Adorable' character by its bitter end.

If this was supposed to be some heat-seeking missile that sprinted up the card towards main events, then it flopped. It flopped big style. Piper, for the second year running, was handed a lame duck at 'Mania. He was expected to make the best of a bad situation, but even industry titans like Roddy could never be considered miracle workers.

'Adorable'? Nah, abominable would be more like it.
