10 Anti-Valentine’s Day Comics

6. Paying For It - Chester Brown

Chester Brown Paying For It Ah, sex €“ the finale to Valentine's Day (if you ticked all the right boxes, guys!). But what about if you're not with someone and you still want to get laid? Paying For It is an autobiographical comic by award-winning cartoonist Chester Brown who candidly talks about his experience with using prostitutes to satisfy himself when he wasn't in a relationship. But this book isn't a lurid recounting of one woman after another but a thoughtful polemic that explores sex work and it's place in society, with its (no pun intended) pros and cons. If nothing else you'll walk away from the book realising that it's not all as sordid as you'd expect and that in a modern society with online reviews, clean apartments, and willing participants who make good money, prostitution isn't just abused women with drug problems or violent pimps. Eye-opening and clever, Paying For It is a really interesting comic about sex and modern-day prostitution from an intelligent john.
