What if Superman were real but went crazy and tried to destroy the planet? That's the bare bones premise of Mark Waid and Peter Krause's Irredeemable which follows the Plutonian, a Superman-esque figure who spends years of his life helping the people of Earth to the point where they take him for granted and no longer respect him. Enduring even longer the abuse and heckles of ungrateful ordinary people whose lives he saves over and over again, sends him to the edge and, when his most trusted friend reveals his secret identity, pushes him over it. What follows is chaos and destruction on a mass scale as Plutonian takes out entire cities and, in one memorable scene, destroys the Philippines! But the other superheroes aren't safe either as he hunts down the former members of his superhero team, a JLA-facsimile, killing them all, one by one. The orgy of destruction and violence is really entertaining and puts an interesting slant on the character of Superman. Irredeemable is well worth reading to see what someone cutting loose after having one bad day too many looks like!
