Kingdom Come is Superman's The Dark Knight Returns. A dystopian tale of Superman returning to save the world one last time.

Featuring lavish Norman Rockwell like paintings by artist Alex Ross, and written by fan favorite Mark Waid, the series depicted a future where the world is overrun by an undisciplined new generation of metahumans. They fight just for the sake of fighting with no regard for the destruction they cause or the safety of the civilian populace. They are unopposed since the heroes of yesterday vanished soon as after Superman abandoned his never-ending battle.

Kal-El retreated to his Fortress of Solitude for ten years after the tragic death of Lois Lane at the hands of The Joker. While losing Lois caused Kal-El to shun his Clark Kent identity, it was the public's acceptance of Magog, the "hero" who killed a shackled Joker in cold blood, that made him forgo being Superman. The world he thought he knew had changed into one that no longer shared his values, so he left them to face the path they choose.

When Wonder Woman brings word of a terrible catastrophe that shows the world in on the brink of possible destruction, Kal-El becomes Superman to try and set the world back down a more responsible path. Diana told Clark their generation takes it's lead from him, and if he doesn't stand up... no one will. Superman returns in full glory to assemble a team of heroes ready to shape the new generation into true heroes, and he's not taking no for answer.
