10 Awe-Inspiring Superman Moments That Prove He's DC's Greatest Hero

2. The Death & Return Of Superman

Anyone who read comics in 1992 remembers the death of Superman. There are certain moments that grab the collective attention, and become instantly iconic. The black bagged collector's edition started going for over $50 on opening day, eventually going platinum. The newsstand edition sold out, and went as high as a fourth printing run to try and meet demand.

DC Comics staff knew this was just part, but the rest of the world took this as the true end. It became worldwide news, and was covered by the media as a historic moment. People who hadn't read a comic in years rushed to find a copy to be there for the end when Superman valiantly laid down his life in combat bringing down the monster Doomsday. The creature tore through anything and anyone who stood before him, until only one wouldn't back down, that of course being the Man of Steel himself.

His return could have potentially come off as cheesy or a cash in due to Superman's renewed popularity. However his return was just the next natural step of this ongoing story that only further echoed the character's biblical allegory. As if resurrection wasn't epic enough, the story also gives another twist. Instead of Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, we got four new Supermen.

The mystery of which, if any, were the true Superman was an exciting story that illustrated that being there can only be one true Superman. It takes more than a cape or "S" to be Superman. Kal-El is the only Man of Steel, and irreplaceable as the star of DC Comics.
