10 Awesome Alternate Versions Of Superman
6. The Dark Knight Returns Superman
Frank Miller’s subversive take on Superman sees him inhabiting a dystopian future where the Justice League is disbanded, and Superman himself is the only remaining government approved superhero.
Rather than the traditionally inspiring version this is a more cynical depiction of the character; he obediently follows the orders of the US president, and is used as a powerful military asset in foreign conflicts, assisting US forces fighting the Russians.
While a departure from the norm this story makes for an interesting interpretation, and Miller does a great job at delving deep into the rationale that may cause a character like Superman to become this way. Superman recognises the destructive capabilities of humanity’s fear, illustrated poignantly when he is injured by a nuclear missile, destroying his surroundings.
He submits to the will of his government to maintain collective harmony, having seen the chaos unleashed by the return of Batman, depicted as a radical individualist who follows no law but his own.
