10 Awesome Image Comics Series You Should Be Reading

2. The Manhattan Projects

Do you remember when we said that 'East Of West' wouldn't be writer Jonathan Hickman's first entry on our list? This is the second and boy is it a doozy! 'The Manhattan Projects' is one of the most innovative, creative, mind-expanding and downright weird comics we've ever read, and we've loved every single issue. It would do Hickman a disservice to say his style can be similar to Grant Morrison, but it is a comparison that has some merit. They both operate in a similar wheelhouse. The series puts forth the idea that at the end of World War II, the Manhattan Project (the building of the atomic bomb) was in fact a cover story for any number of wackier experiments and projects that were being worked on. The series has featured alien races, alternate dimensions, robots, the artificial intelligence of the deceased President Roosevelt and much more. Somehow, Hickman and artist Nick Pitarra keep the stories accessible and deliriously entertaining, without being off-putting when it comes to the more out-there ideas. Oh, and it features a gun-toting Einstein. 'Nuff said.
