10 Awesome Image Comics Series You Should Be Reading
3. Bedlam
Eight entries into our list and this is the first series featuring a superhero. Of course, this being Image Comics, the series is an extremely dark and violent take on a superhero story. Naturally. 'Bedlam' follows Fillmore Press, a man who is acting as a consultant for the city of Bedlam's Police Department. Fillmore is a bit of an oddball, with a hundred yard, vacant stare, but seems fairly harmless and has such an affinity for getting inside the minds of criminals that the police can hardly turn down his help. Think along the lines of the modern day interpretation of Sherlock Holmes in 'Sherlock' and 'Elementary'. Of course, the reason he has such keen insights into the criminal mind is because he was once Madder Red, the supervillain who used to torture the city and it's protector, The First. At some point, Madder Red 'got better' (we won't spoil how), faked his death and re-emerged as Fillmore Press. Writer Nick Spencer (Secret Avengers) expertly keeps readers guessing as to Press' true motivations. You're just never sure if he is genuinely 'cured' or if he will return to his murderous ways (which Spencer shows us in extremely graphic flashbacks at the start of each issue). It's a great series and deservedly takes it's place near the top of this list.
