10 Awesome Image Comics Series You Should Be Reading

7. Southern Bastards

Now for something completely different! 'Southern Bastards' is described by Image as 'A Southern Fried Crime Comic' by Jason Aaron (Wolverine) and Jason Latour (Winter Soldier). It's a simple story: Earl Tubb is an old man who returns to his childhood home in the Deep South to clear out his deceased father's house. Earl and his dad didn't ever get along, and he hasn't been back since he left for war as a teenager. Now he sees that his town isn't what he remembers and finds that the local high school football coach, Coach Boss, is in fact involved in all manner of seedy illegal doings that have been polluting the town. Earl is then forced to take matters into his own hands in order to clean up the town... or die trying. There's few things more satisfying in fiction than a down and dirty, gritty and grimy, crime story (or at least, that's what we think). 'Southern Bastards' nails the tone right from the first page and the reader knows this story isn't going to end well for anyone involved, but it's damn sure going to be thrilling, funny, heartbreaking and very violent. Jason Aaron's script is excellent, simple and authentic and Jason Latour's art is perfectly suited to the material: think of something similar to Eduardo Risso's (100 Bullets) style.
