8. Huntress
There have been three heroes to bear the ''Huntress'' moniker in the DC annals but the most well-known iteration of this hero is Helena Bertinelli. Like most street-level heroes, the rise of Huntress was marked by familial tragedy at an early age. Helena was born into the Bertinelli family, one of Gotham's most notorious crime families.
She witnesses the death of her family at the hands of a rival crime family and trains to become a living weapon capable of enacting vengeance on her family's murderers.
Her crusade is decidedly more violent and unpredictable than her contemporaries, and this puts her at odds with heroes such as Batman, Batgirl, and Nightwing.
Over time, however, she reins in her bloodthirsty nature and even finds a day job as a teacher, a role that gives her a chance to live her childhood dreams and find a purpose outside of the more intense life that comes with being a vigilante. In her time, she's also been part of superhero teams such as the Justice League, Birds of Prey and the Outsiders.
The hero was a fan favourite for years but she never got the attention that heroes such as Batman have received since her debut. Fortunately, the recent Birds of Prey movie has given her a chance for greater recognition, courtesy of Mary Elizabeth Winstead's winning performance.
