6. Plastic Man
One of the more powerful ''joke characters'' in comics, Plastic Man's goofy persona and near-limitless elasticity have been sources for readers' entertainment for nearly 80 years.
Originally created by Jack Cole and published under Quality Comics, the character was acquired by DC in 1956, where he really came into his own as a character in surreal and quirky stories.
Orphaned at a young age, Patrick ''Eel'' O' Brien was forced onto the streets and turned to small-time crime to make ends meet. During a heist gone awry, O'Brien was shot in the shoulder and doused in a special chemical that rubberized his entire body.
One aspect that sets O'Brien from most heroes is his financial motivation to fight crime, a decision that landed him in various hijinks and was even the source for internal conflict once the hero saw the more altruistic side of crime-fighting.
His elastic body has granted him abilities such as malleability, size alteration, immunity to telepathy, density alteration and even regeneration that extends into immortality. He's even gone against powerhouses such as the Martian Manhunter during the latter's villainous turn as Fernus. This event set Plastic Man as a threat to villains, despite his more laidback and ludicrous nature.
