10 Awesome Ways To Celebrate Batman's 75th Anniversary
8. Detective Comics #27
The New 52 reboot allowed tales of DC heroes to continue free from the constraints of decades of back issues. In Batman's case, every excuse to do a commemorative issue was a welcome one. His original 1939 debut was in Detective Comics #27, a title which became "his" shortly thereafter, and the renumbering of issues for the second volume of the series allowed DC to produce Detective Comics #27 all over again. The 80-page giant issue is packed with stories from a number of famous Batman scribes and artists - Brad Meltzer and Bryan Hitch retell "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate" from the original 'tec #27 in a modern context, the "Gothtopia" arc gets a continuation, and Gregg Hurwitz and the legendary Neal Adams take the cake with their stunning short piece "Old School". These pieces and others make for a brilliant homage to the Dark Knight. Despite the more expensive cover price, this issue may be the perfect 75th Anniversary issue - it's largely unconcerned with "modernizing" Batman, but recognizes his place in both a historical and present-day world. For the best Batman of yesterday and today all in one issue, pick up Detective Comics #27.
