10 Batmen Who Aren't Bruce Wayne

2. Jason Todd - Battle For The Cowl

Batman was "dead" again for a time in the mid 00s, leaving Gotham without a Dark Knight and two Robins vying for the title. The bat-family is unsure how to proceed without Bruce's guidance. While Tim Drake urges a reluctant Dick Grayson to take up the mantle, Jason Todd eagerly takes his once-mentors place.

Jason, Bruce's second Robin, has returned to the world of the living after being killed by Joker in the notorious 1988 storyline "Death in the Family". Resentful of Bruce for allowing the Joker to live after murdering him, Jason views him as too merciful and doesn't share his rule against killing or guns.

Jason begins operating as a dual pistol wielding Batman, brutally dispatching criminals and leaving behind handwritten notes that read "I AM BATMAN". Dick attempts to apprehend Jason before he makes his escape back to his makeshift Batcave in Gotham's subway. There he finds Tim Drake dressed as Batman, mercilessly beats him within an inch of his life and sets out to finish off Grayson.

In their final confrontation Grayson and Todd square off, with the winner claiming the title of Batman conclusively and proving their worth. Dick is successful in stopping Jason. Todd continued his vigilante work though, in pretty much the same manner as he did while Batman, taking on the persona of Red Hood. This isn't even close to the last time Todd and the batfamily come to blows.
