10 Batmen Who Aren't Bruce Wayne

1. Dick Grayson - Batman & Robin

Flashpoint Batman Thomas Wayne
DC Comics

Dick Grayson is the character most people think of when they talk about "Robin". The orphaned son of the circus performers the "Flying Graysons", he was adopted by Bruce and became the original Boy Wonder in 1940's Detective Comics #38. Since his introduction, Grayson has been a fan favorite and considered by many to be the only true heir to the cowl.

Grayson has been one of the few characters allowed to "grow up" since his introduction. Eventually becoming frustrated with Bruce's strict guidelines to crime-fighting, he adopted the persona Nightwing. Coming into his own as the protector of Gothams sister city Bludhaven.

After the events of "Battle for the Cowl" Dick accepts the job for which he's been groomed for most of his life, (indefinitely) being Batman. With Damian as his Robin, Dick carries on Bruce's legacy. He decides that if he's going to be the Dark Knight, he's going to do it his way, leaving the Batcave as a memorial. He sets up shop under Wayne Tower in his newly designed Bat-Bunker featuring a flying Batmobile.

Not counting Terry, Dick filled the role of Batman far longer than his counterparts. He was accepted by fans as the true Batman and continued playing the part for years until the start of the New-52. Even after Bruce eventually returned to life and the Batcave, he implored Dick to continue operating as his counterpart. We don't think there's a more conclusive claim to being Batman than Bruce Wayne telling you you're Batman.
