7. Death Of The Family
Death Of The Family is a 23 issue arc from 2012 that was the first major storyline for The Joker in the current New 52 continuity. He had previously been captured in Detective Comics #1 and this story marked his return to Gotham City. It turns out that getting sent to Arkham Asylum was all part of his plan to meet with his fellow Bat-villain, The Dollmaker, so that he could have his face surgically removed and pinned to his cell wall to represent his "rebirth". Having escaped from Arkham, he had disappeared for a year before returning, recovering his face (which he now wears as a mask) and kidnapping the people closest to Batman one at a time. This Joker was a vicious psychopath who really wanted to traumatise Batman - by doing things like threatening to set the Bat-family on fire and making Batman think he had removed all of their faces - and the story had a huge impact on the Batman mythos and its fans.
