3. Nightwing Gets Shot
There isn't a duo more iconic than Batman and Robin. However, while six people have taken on the mantle of Robin in mainstream DC continuity, everything always comes back to Dick Grayson. In the five issues following Bruce Wayne's marriage with Selina Kyle went belly up (to no one's surprise), Dick has been there to comfort his adopted father.
Batman #55 is the first part to a story but it doesn't play out that way. The entire thing up until the end is Nightwing being jovial and making fun quips to try and liven the Bat-brooding. Plus the fact that they have to take on undead mummies raised by a guy called the Phantom Pharaoh just ramps the fun factor of the book exponentially.
That is... until the very end, where Nightwing gets shot through the head. It isn't pretty, and it isn't during some fight. The Beast snipes him out of nowhere and with every intent to kill him, throwing all the previous joy into sharp contrast with the fact that Dick Grayson may be dead.
However, this didn't kill him, only making him act a lot different.
