10 Best Comic Books Of 2017 (So Far)

1. Mister Miracle

Mister Miracle Tom King
DC Comics/Mitch Gerads

God. Where do we even start with this?

Mister Miracle released yesterday and it's everything every Jack Kirby lover wants to see in a comic book, and everything anyone who loved Justice League Unlimited wants to see in the DC Universe. The book is also all kinds of clever, as King applies the dark inflections of Kirby's original work and places them as the guiding tenets of the series. It's an intense read, and, apart from the fact that it also looks beautiful (Mitch Gerads' pencils are perfect, it must be said), King's dissection of the character is both masterful and raw.

It's likely, too, that it will have defied expectation. The genius of the debut issue lies in its ability to reinvent Kirby's work, which King and Gerads paint with dissonant tones and dramatic subtleties. It's clear that the Scott Free of this book is a man trapped between two worlds, and his return to the DCU - whilst undoubtedly atmospheric in more than one respect - is one worth investing in.

Unexpected, exciting and bold all at once, Mister Miracle may have only released yesterday, but King and Gerads have made it abundantly clear that it's this year's most inspiring - and terrifying - superhero series.

Issue #2 releases next month, incase you're interested.
