10 Best Comic Books Of 2018
4. Abbott
Saladin Ahmed is one of the brightest talents currently working in the comics industry, with Black Bolt being one of the standout books of 2017, and though he has been working on some special books for the House of Ideas this year too (stay peeled for Miles Morales: Spider-Man next year), Abbott - published by Boom! Studios - might just be his best.
Joined by Sami Kivelä, Jason Worde and Jim Cambell, Ahmed tells the story of the eponymous Abbott as she uncovers an occult conspiracy no one else seems to want to acknowledge. She isn't a police officer, a detective or a private eye, but instead a determined reporter hellbent on uncovering the truth during a period typified by corruption - the 1970s.
Kivelä deserves particular praise for nailing the look of the decade, with Worde's colours immaculate as always, but Ahmed himself is equally excellent in conveying the milieu as well, seen through the eyes of the titular reporter.
In short, Abbott is a tremendous read that simply must be read. With a brilliantly recreated setting, a superb protagonist and a fantastic mystery, it's a comic readers cannot afford to miss.
