10 Best Comic First Issues This Week (Dec 19th, 2018)

4. Defenders: The Best Defense #1

Stan Lee Banner
Marvel Comics/Ron Garney

The fifth one-shot in a line of one-shots, the cosmic crisis that brings together a Doctor Strange from a universe where all was lost, the arrogant King Namor the Sub-Mariner, a mentally unstable Immortal Hulk, and the Silver Surfer all must come together to save the Earth from being tossed into the celestial forge, The Train.

With the creative team of Al Ewing and Joe Bennett were announced to be the driving team behind this, fans of Immortal Hulk were giddy. Then the one-shots, each focusing primarily on a member of the team while leading to their aspects of this issue, built the hype but maybe kept people wondering where it would go.

These four characters in recent times have become buried in their solo stories that it would take nothing short of a Jack Kirby-sized cosmic tale to get them even in the same room.

While it was only a one-shot meaning it would have been excused for skipping the character dynamics and foibles, by the end of this, they still aren't a real team. They worked together but this was just the beginning, leading to the massive hint that a new ongoing series is somewhere down the pipeline!
