10 Best DC Comics #1 Of The Modern Age

1. Batman And Robin #1

All Star Superman Frank Quitely
DC Comics

Robin is a light in the darkness of Batman's world. Appearing in the pages of Detective Comics back in the 1940s, Dick Grayson was the original version of the boy wonder. Over the next eighty years, others would take up the mask, including Tim Drake and Jason Todd, but most would always be in Grayson's shadow.

When Grant Morrison took over writing Batman, picking up a plot thread from an old story called Son of The Demon, he introduced Bruce Wayne and Talia Al Ghouls son Damian. Although initially antagonistic towards his father, he would quickly become a fan favourite and an essential piece of Batman lore.

During the events of Final Crisis, Bruce Wayne would "die", and a new Batman title would launch, featuring a remarkable inversion of the Batman and Robin dynamic. Dick Grayson was still the bright, cheerful light in the duo; only he now wore the Dark Knight's cape and cowl. The role of a troubled, brooding anti-hero would fall to Damian Wayne's Robin.

The book would serve to set up the new status quo for Batman and his allies and introduce readers to one of the best and most twisted Batman villains of the modern age; Professor Pyg.
