In a very different world than the DC Universe readers know, Gotham City is in chaos thanks to an electromagnetic pulse that deprived the Western Hemisphere of its power. Superman has become the enforcer for an extremely Conservative Ronald Reagan-run American government, and Batman is badly wounded after a violent confrontation with the Joker where the Clown Prince killed himself.

Even as injured as he was, Batman used his skills to organize Robin and the “Sons of Batman” to return order back to Gotham City, making it the safest and best-fed city in the country. A political embarrassment to the government, the administration sends Superman to take the Dark Knight down.

In Batman: The Dark Knight Returns #4, forewarned by a now one-armed Green Arrow, Bruce created a powerful battlesuit. Luckily for him, Clark was quickly losing power because the EMP had blocked out the sun with dust and debris as well. The battle between the two icons took place in Crime Alley.

Oliver shot a synthetic Kryptonite arrow at Superman to help Batman gain an early upper hand in the fight. From there, these former best friend traded blows, with both sides getting solid hits in, but Bruce prevailed and told Clark to remember that the Caped Crusader was the one man who beat him.

Of course, just as Wayne was about to claim victory, he suffered a heart attack and died. Or so it appeared.
