10 Best New DC Characters Of The 21st Century
6. Wallace West
Now that we've covered one of the few unanimously great elements of the New 52, it's time to look at a more controversial one in Wallace West. Wallace "Wally" West was originally introduced as this universe's Wally West - the aforementioned one that fought Zoom - and was changed to be much younger and of African American descent. Readers were initially hesitant to accept the new Wally after so many years of loving the previous one, and Wallace not appearing to have adopted any of those personality traits.
Fortunately, Rebirth came along in 2016 and restored the old Wally West back into continuity, while not erasing the new one. There are now two Wally Wests. Both cousins. Both named after the same great-grandfather. Let that sink in for a moment and then accept that comics are weird.
From Rebirth, Wallace had space to fill and really came into his own as the new Kid-Flash, having balanced doses of teen angst and protective demeanour for his aunt Iris, as well as a growing bond with The Flash (Barry Allen). Beyond the Flash series, Wallace has found love within the newest edition of the Teen Titans and, briefly, Deathstroke's team Defiance.
