10 Best New DC Characters Of The 21st Century
5. Aqualad (Kaldur'ahm)
In contrast to Miss Martian, Kaldur'ahm originated directly from the Young Justice animated series as a main character and the original team leader. Kaldur'ahm is presented as the most mature member of the team, having been Aquaman's protege and having studied sorcery in Atlantis, which he utilises in his water blades.
Kaldur immediately stands out amongst his fellow teammates due to his cool and collected aura, taking the time to make the right decisions, even if they aren't always the easiest. This becomes paramount in season 2, where Kaldur goes undercover as Black Manta's henchman (after finding out that he is his father), pretends to kill Artemis, and all the while keeps the deception a secret from many of his friends.
The decision to create such an emotionally heavy deception is an admirable quality that countless members of the Justice League would greatly envy.
Although a version of the character - by the name of Jackson Hyde - debuts in the comics during Brightest Day, it is not until the Benjamin Percy's run of Teen Titans during Rebirth that he begins to resemble his Young Justice original. In the run, Percy establishes Kaldur as a gay teenager, a change so welcomed by fans that it has recently been adopted in the third season of Young Justice.
