10 Best New Marvel Characters Of The 21st Century
2. Kamala Khan
Kamala Khan first appeared in Captain Marvel in 2013, before debuting in her own solo story and taking up the mantle of Ms. Marvel a year later. This first story won the 2015 Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story, so Kamala Khan flew out of the gates at her first opportunity.
Since then, she’s had a huge cultural impact. Her image was initially targeted by Islamophobes (Khan is one of the first Muslim heroes), before counter protestors covered these posters who pro-inclusivity slogans.
She was also mentioned in a speech by Barack Obama, who welcomed her creator Sana Amanat to the White House for Women’s History Month.
This swirling cultural and political cycle shouldn’t distract from the fact Khan enjoyed one of Marvel’s strongest debuts in ages though. The art style is gorgeous and the grounded teen girl story played against her outlandish embiggen power is note perfect. Khan keeps moving from strength to strength.
Along with Spider-Gwen and the number one pick here, Khan has made her way into Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 alongside Marvel’s best and brightest. She’s very fun to play as too, so might even rope in some new fans with the Switch exclusive.
